If you love the red apple sangria from Applebee’s, then you’ll love this copycat recipe that tastes JUST like the real thing! Perfect for parties or a relaxing night in!

Applebee's Red Apple Sangria (Copycat Recipe) (1)

Love going out to restaurants and ordering a co*cktail or two? Hate the steep price tag? Then you’re in the right place! Here I’m sharing a copycat recipe for Applebee’s popular red apple sangria, that you can make right at home, with no tip needed!

Restaurant co*cktails. Everyone has their favorite right? My Mom’s has always been sangria, so when I came across this recipe for an Applebee’s copycat version, I knew I had to make it! Applebee’s version is made a little differently than a traditional sangria, but still tastes every bit as delicious!

Traditionally, the restaurant version is sold in a goblet, like this one… which I don’t have. So I served it in my goblets, and I think it still works just as well. Honestly you could serve this in a coffee cup and it would still taste good… just depends on how “authentic” you want to be.

Speaking of authentic… this recipe is by Todd Wilbur from www.TopSecretRecipes.com and he suggests using the following brands to have a truly authentic copycat.

  • Sutter Home Cabernet Sauvignon
  • Shakka apple liqueur
  • Ocean Spray cranberry juice co*cktail
  • Dole pineapple juice
  • Sierra Mist soda

BUT, I couldn’t find Shakka liqueur and my store was out of Sierra Mist. So I used Dekuyper Sour Apple Pucker and store brand lemon lime soda, and thought it tasted dead-on like the red apple sangria from Applebee’s. So your mileage may vary on that one 🙂

WHAT IF I WANT TO MAKE THIS RECIPE FOR A CROWD?

Good call! Trust me, everyone will be asking you for the recipe and asking for refills. Originally this recipe was only for a single drink, but down in the recipe notes section I’ve detailed how to make it for a crowd in a pitcher. Of course you’ll have to do a little math and decide by how many to multiply to get the right servings… but for reference… the single drink recipe makes 16oz.

Cabernet Sauvignon …. Sangria requires sangria wine – easily available.

Yes, for a traditional sangria… but to make this a copycat of Applebee’s, use what I’ve listed.

I have used Woodbridge Cab and it’s not the same. Use Sutter Home and you will find it’s the exact same as Applebees. Only I have found making it the night before and placing in the fridge gives it a far superior blended taste than making it and serving immediately.

For reference, I use a 1.5L bottle of wine. That’s 18 servings. So multiply the recipe by 18. The 750mL (standard bottle) is 9 servings.

      1.5L is
      Wine (whole 1.5L)
      Apple liquor – 22.5oz
      Cherry juice – 9oz
      Cranberry – 27oz
      Pineapple – 27oz
      Double the fruit

Does sangria contain orange juice? ›

Add apples, oranges, and sugar to a large pitcher and muddle with a muddler or wooden spoon for 45 seconds. Add orange juice and brandy and muddle again to combine for 30 seconds. Add red wine and stir to incorporate, then taste and adjust flavor as needed.

What is red and white sangria? ›

Originating from Spain, sangria is a mixed alcoholic drink made with red or white wine. It can also include flavored liqueur, fruit juice, and a variety of sliced fruits such as oranges, pineapples, mango, pears, kiwi, and more.

Is soda added to sangria? ›

Sangria should have some fizz to it, so some kind of carbonated beverage is usually added to the concoction in order to give it some bubbles. Some popular carbonated beverages that are commonly added to sangria include soda water, seltzer water, or even flavored soda.

Is apple schnapps and apple liqueur the same? ›

Apple schnapps is a sweetened apple liqueur most often used in Appletinis. Though in the past you used to be stuck with the sweet tart brands like DeKuyper and Hiram Walker, now there are some higher quality examples available.

What can you substitute for liqueur in a recipe? ›

Flavored liqueurs often make their way into baked goods. Here's another spot where you can replicate the original flavor. Coffee-flavored liqueurs can be replaced with espresso powder dissolved in water, or plain brewed coffee; ditto chocolate liqueur and cocoa powder.

Image of What are the basic ingredients for sangria?
Red wine is a type of wine made from dark-colored grape varieties. The color of the wine can range from intense violet, typical of young wines, through to brick red for mature wines and brown for older red wines.

What is the best cheap red wine for sangria? ›

1) Bottle of Garnacha or Pinot Noir

Garnacha comes from Spain, so it's my top pick for authentic Spanish sangria! Choose an inexpensive wine (under $20) that you would enjoy on its own. Why Garnacha and Pinot Noir? They're fruity, low-tannin red wines.

What kind of wine is best for sangria? ›

Any dry red wine will work, but we like to use fruity Spanish wine, such as Garnacha for the best flavor results. It doesn't have to be the most expensive bottle either.

Which sangria is better white or red? ›

Key Takeaway: Red and white sangria are made with different wines. There is no way to tell which one is better. It all boils down to personal preference. However, don't be afraid to experiment with recipes for your bar or restaurant.

Which sangria is sweeter red or white? ›

Drier wines will need to be sweetened more, a lighter, sweeter wine won't need too much added to it. Typically the white sangria has a sweeter flavor than the red, but again, it's all up to you!

What is the best white wine for red sangria? ›

When it comes to choosing the white wine for your sangria your best bets are dryer, more acidic, and crisp fresh whites like Pinot Grigio, Sauvignon Blanc, Vermentino, or Grenache Blanc. An Albariño, Moscato, or rosé would be nice too. But also, we live by the rule, pour what Paso Robles wine you like!

What's a good brandy for sangria? ›

"When choosing a brandy, it is best to go toward a Spanish one made with Spanish grapes," said Trujillo. "I find Carlos I Solera Gran Reserva Brandy to be perfect for sangria." This brandy was aged in American oak casks and has notes of vanilla and caramel.

What fruit is good for sangria? ›

Any juicy fruits (such as citrus, berries, grapes, pineapple, mango, kiwi, etc.) would be delicious. Add fresh ginger: If you would like to give your sangria a bit of a kick, muddle in a few slices of fresh ginger.

Why is sangria so strong? ›

That very much depends on how the sangria is made. A sangria spiked with peach brandy has a higher alcohol content than a sangria made with only wine. The European Union law gives you a general idea of the alcohol percentage: Drinks labelled as sangria must have an alcoholic strength by volume of less than 12% vol.

What is a substitute for Calvados or applejack? ›

So something like Grand Marnier if switching from apples to oranges makes sense. Port has a nice flavor and might go well if the dish is savory. For example a sauce for a pork lion. I make a pate from chicken livers using Calvados, but I can substitute sherry for the Calvados if there isn't any around.

What is a substitute for Calvados in a co*cktail? ›

I've given a few alternatives to the Calvados in the post. You could also substitute cognac or brandy, which will make it a somewhat different drink. If you want to add apple flavor, use apple juice rather than the wine. Apple bitters can also be added to the drink too.

What can I use instead of Frangelico liqueur? ›

If you don't have Frangelico then Nigella suggests rum as an alternative. If you want to avoid alcohol then we would suggest replacing the 80ml (5 tablespoons) of Frangelico with 3 tablespoons of whole milk and 2 tablespoons of hazelnut syrup (the type used to make flavoured coffees).

Can you substitute extract for liqueur? ›

The substitution can vary depending on the recipe, however, a good place to start is with ¼ Tsp of extract, regardless of the amount of liqueur called for. We recommend tasting the batter and determining if that is enough flavoring before adding more.
