Tangipahoa Parish deputies searching for 2 escaped inmates, 2 in custody

THIS IS WDSU NEWS AT FIVE. RIGHT NOW. THE SEARCH IS ON FOR TWO INMATES WHO HAVE BEEN ON THE RUN SINCE SUNDAY AFTERNOON. FORTUNATELY, THE TANGIPAHOA PARISH SHERIFF’S OFFICE CAPTURED TWO OTHERS THIS MORNING TRAYVON JOHNSON AND AVERY GUIDRY WERE FOUND HIDING IN A DUMPSTER BEHIND A DOLLAR GENERAL IN HAMMOND. WDSU REPORTER ARIELLE BRUMFIELD LIVE WITH HOW ALL OF THEM BROKE OUT IN THE FIRST PLACE. ARIELLE. WELL, YOU GUYS, THOSE FOUR INMATES, THEY ESCAPED WITHIN JUST HOURS OF EACH OTHER HERE OVER THE WEEKEND. AND WE’RE TOLD THEY TOOK ADVANTAGE OF A COMPROMISED SECURITY, AS WELL AS THE LOW STAFFING NUMBERS OVER THE WEEKEND. NEIGHBORS WHO LIVE IN THIS AREA SAY THEY ARE CONCERNED BECAUSE THIS IS SOMETHING THAT CONTINUES TO HAPPEN. WE’RE STILL LOOKING FOR THE OTHER TWO. WE FEEL THAT THEY’RE NO LONGER IN TANGIPAHOA PARISH SEARCH CONTINUES FOR 19 YEAR-OLD. OMARION HOOKFIN OF HAMMOND AND 20 YEAR-OLD JAMARCUS CYPRIAN OF AMITE, WHO ESCAPED FROM THE AMIT JAIL SUNDAY AFTERNOON. HOOKFIN AND CYPRIAN RAN OFF LESS THAN 24 HOURS AFTER 21 YEAR-OLD TRAYVON JOHNSON AND 19 YEAR-OLD AVERY GUIDRY, BOTH OF NATALBANY, ESCAPED CUSTODY ON SATURDAY. OUR WARDEN WAS CONTACTED BY FAMILY MEMBER ADVISING THAT, UH, TWO OF THESE TWO INDIVIDUALS HAD IN FACT ESCAPED FROM OUR JAIL FROM CUSTODY AND THAT THEY HAD WENT TO A RELATIVE’S HOUSE IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT. CHIEF JIMMY TRAVIS SAYS JOHNSON AND GUIDRY WERE CAUGHT MONDAY MORNING. DRONES AND K-9S HELPED DEPUTIES FIND THEM HIDING IN A DUMPSTER OFF OF PUMPKIN CENTER ROAD IN BATON ROUGE HIGHWAY IN HAMMOND. HE SAYS THE FOUR INMATES ESCAPED IN PARIS USING THE SAME ROUTE AND TOOK ADVANTAGE OF THE JAIL’S WEAKENED SECURITY. IF THE WALL WOULDN’T HAVE THE GAP IN IT, YOU WOULDN’T BE ABLE TO GET OVER THE WALL OR UNDER THE WALL. IF THE FENCE WOULDN’T HAVE HAD THE CORROSION WHERE THEY WERE ABLE TO TAKE AND PHYSICALLY BREAK THE WIRE AND WORK IT LOOSE, YOU WOULDN’T HAVE BEEN ABLE TO GET TO THE WALL TO GO UNDER IT. HE ALSO SAYS THE JAIL IS SHORT STAFFED AND MANY OF THE HIRES ARE NOT PROPERLY TRAINED, LEAVING NEIGHBORS LIKE JEROME MCGEE CONCERNED. AND IT’S A LOT OF CONCERN THAT I HAVE TO SAY, YOU KNOW, THEY REALLY CAN’T DO THEIR JOB AND THEY NOT ENOUGH MANPOWER OVER THERE. MCGEE SAYS HE’S WITNESSED AN INMATE ESCAPE BEFORE HE SAYS THE GATE AT THE JAIL WAS LEFT OPEN A LITTLE TOO LONG ONCE, AND A FEMALE INMATE TOOK OFF RUNNING. IT’S THE REASON HE HAS A GERMAN SHEPHERD NOW PROTECTING HIS HOME. THE CHIEF IS TAKING RESPONSIBILITY FOR THIS LATEST ESCAPE. IT’S A FAILURE, YOU KNOW, WE HAD WE WE HAD A FAILURE WITHIN THAT, WE HOPE TO CORRECT. AND THE TEAMS AT THE SHERIFF OFFICE, THEY HAVE BEEN OUT LOOKING FOR THESE TWO INMATES. HOOKFIN WAS IN FOR MURDER. CYPRIAN IN FOR ARMED ROBBERY. IF YOU BELIEVE YOU’VE SEEN EITHER OF THESE INDIVIDUALS TOGETHER OR OR SEPARATELY, YOU’RE ASKED TO CALL 911 REPORTING HERE IN AMIT.

Two escaped inmates in Tangipahoa Parish have been found and taken into custody Monday morning.The sheriff's office says that Travon Johnson and Avery Guidry were located inside of a dumpster behind the Dollar General Store on Pumpkin Center Road and Old Baton Rouge Highway.Omarion Hookfin and Jamarcus Cyprian are still at large and TPSO believes they are no longer in Tangipahoa Parish.TPSO says Guidry and Johnson escaped Saturday by going under a gap in the wall and then scaled two wired fences. Hookfin and Cyprian escaped Sunday in the same way. The jail was unaware of the escaped inmates and chief for TPSO, Jimmy Travis says if proper head counts had been conducted, they would have known about the escapes immediately.The Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff's Office began searching for four inmates who escaped from the Tangipahoa Parish Jail Sunday night.In a news release, the sheriff said the four inmates were able to escape the perimeter fence of the jail while participating in their recreational time in the yard. When crews inspected the fence, a section was found to be vulnerable and easily maneuvered so that a small body could slide through. Deputies identified the four inmates,two are in custody and two still remain at large: Omarion Hookfin, 19, of HammondAvery Guidry, 19, of NatalbanyJamarcus Cyprian, 20, of AmiteTravon Johnson, 21, of NatalbanyThe sheriff's office said Johnson, Hookfin and Guidry were in jail following their arrest for a 2022 homicide in Hammond. Cyprian was serving time for armed robbery and weapons charges. Hookfin was also charged with aggravated battery while in jail in Catahoula Parish.
