What is a seven layer dip?

A 7 layer dip is a popular party appetizer that combines several layers of favorite taco toppings stacked on top of one another to create one tasty dip that guests are sure to love. There are many variations of this recipe, but my seven layer dip includes of ground meat, refried beans, sour cream, guacamole, shredded cheese, lettuce, and diced tomatoes on top.

I like to call it a taco dip because the ground meat is seasoned generously with taco seasoning and then mixed with refried beans.

Serving suggestions

One of the best parts of this taco dip is that there are so many different ways to enjoy it. Tortilla chips are a classic choice but it also pairs well with other types of chips, crackers, pretzels, or any veggies.

If you are looking for other appetizers to serve alongside this 7 layer taco dip, this appetizer would fit in well on a spread with Mini Pretzel Dogs and Fried Pickles.

Ingredients

  • Olive Oil – I use extra virgin olive oil to saute the meat but you can use any cooking oil that you like.
  • Ground Turkey – I used ground turkey for the base of this 7 layer taco dip but you could also use ground beef or ground chicken.
  • Taco Seasoning – Taco seasoning is a staple of any taco dip. Add it to both the ground meat and the sour cream for a little more flavor.
  • Refried Pinto Beans – The beans mix in with the meat to make the first two (in one) delicious layers of the dip. I used refried pinto beans but you could also use refried black beans.
  • Sour Cream – Sour cream gives a nice contrast to the other savory layers of the dip. If you do not like the taste of sour cream, feel free to leave it out.
  • Guacamole – You can use store-bought guacamole or you can whip up your own batch at home for this dip.
  • Shredded Cheddar Cheese – Cheese makes any dip even better. Sprinkle cheddar cheese on top for a rich and creamy element.
  • Shredded Lettuce and Diced Tomatoes – Some crisp lettuce and diced roma tomatoes help to complete this appetizer.
  • Green Onion – If you are a fan of green onions, I highly recommend adding green onions on top. Cilantro would be another great addition.

Ingredient Substitutions

Not only is this 7 layer dip recipe so easy to make but it also is so easy to customize. As I have mentioned, you can use ground turkey, beef, or chicken for the base.

If you want to make this recipe dairy-free, you would just omit the sour cream and either omit or use dairy-free cheese. I also have a paleo taco dip listed on my blog here.

If you want to kick the heat up a notch, this dish would be tasty with sliced jalapenos or even a spicy salsa added in. You could even drizzle hot sauce on top.

The toppings are endless! I love garnishing this taco dip with green onions but cilantro, jalapenos, or black olives are also popular favorites.

How to make

Step 1: Saute meat and add in refried beans

To start, heat oil in a skillet over medium heat and add the ground turkey to the pan. After about three minutes when the meat starts to brown and break into crumbles, season with 1 tbsp taco seasoning and continue browning until cooked through, 7-8 minutes total (Image 1).

Next, remove the skillet from the heat and mix the refried beans in with the turkey (Image 2). This combines two of the layers of the dip but makes assembly easier.

Allow that mixture to cool to room temperature while you prepare the other ingredients.

Step 2: Start layering ingredients

Mix 1 tbsp of taco seasoning into the sour cream in a bowl. Set aside and grab an 8×10 rectangular casserole dish or a pie plate.

Press the ground turkey and bean mixture into the bottom in an even layer. Then, spread the guacamole on top of that in a smooth layer (Image 3). Then, layer on the sour cream mixture (Image 4), the shredded cheese on top of the sour cream, (Image 5), the shredded lettuce, and lastly the diced tomatoes (Image 6).

Step 3: Garnish and serve

Garnish with thinly sliced green onions. Serve immediately at room temperature or place in the fridge to chill and serve as a cold dip. Serve with tortilla chips.

Storage

Once fully cooled, store this taco dip in an airtight container for up to four days. I like to serve leftovers chilled straight from the fridge, but you can also serve them at room temperature.

To make this layered dip ahead of time, prepare all of the layers except the shredded lettuce and fresh tomatoes. Store it in the fridge until you are ready to serve and sprinkle the lettuce and tomatoes over the top just before serving.
