Percy Jackson and the Olympians Season 2: What to Expect (2024)

Percy Jackson and the Olympians was renewed for season 2: here’s what to expect from the new season of the successful Disney+ show!

Fans of the show, and of the books it is based on, will be ecstatic that Percy Jackson and the Olympians is coming back on our screens with a season 2. After a successful first season, which received positive reviews from the critics and incredible numbers in terms of engagement by the public, it does not come as a surprise that the show was renewed earlier this month.

Based on the coming-of-age book series by Rick Riordan, Percy Jackson and the Olympians follows the titular character Percy Jackson (Walker Scobell), a young demigod, as he learns the truth about who his father is and how to navigate this new world where monsters and gods from Ancient Greek myths are very much alive and real. As Percy arrives at Camp Half-blood, the home and training grounds for all demigods, he meets his fellow campers, including Luke Castellan (Charlie Bushnell) and Clarisse La Rue (Dior Goodjohn), before going on a quest that will take him across the United States, with Annabeth Chase (Leah Sava Jeffries) and Grover Underwood (Aryan Simhadri).

What can we expect from season 2 of Percy Jackson and the Olympians? Let’s make some guesses!

1. New Mythical Creatures

The first season of Percy Jackson and the Olympians introduced the audience to a series of mythical monsters some of us may have been familiar with before watching the show as they are all rooted in ancient Greek mythology. Season 2 will undoubtedly continue this pattern by introducing the audience, and the characters in the show, to even more mythical figures and monsters, some of which might very well be scarier and more powerful than the ones we have seen so far. After all, when it comes to Greek mythology the source material offers a very wide range of choices in this matter.

2. “I Get A New Cabin Mate”

Contrary to everyone else at Camp Half Blood, Percy does not share his cabin with anyone in the first season of the show, except for the short time he spends in the Hermes cabin before being claimed as a son of Poseidon. Percy is the only son of Poseidon at the Camp – and the only child of the Big Three (Poseidon, Zeus, and Hades) that the audience is introduced to so far – and, therefore, he gets to have cabin three all for himself rather than share with his demigod siblings, like many other. Or, at least, that is until season 2 of Percy Jackson and the Olympians where the audience will see more of Poseidon’s offspring.

3. Thalia Grace

From the beginning of Percy Jackson and the Olympians, we heard the demigods mention Thalia Grace, daughter of Zeus, multiple times. She is a key part of Annabeth and Luke’s backstories but, so far, viewers have only heard about Thalia from others and never got to see her full story. Of course, a lot of that is because as we know Thalia had been transformed into a pine tree that now marks the official border of Camp Half-Blood. In season 2, Percy Jackson fans can expect to delve deeper into Thalia’s story as she will become one of the main plot points of the upcoming season.

4. Exploring the characters in depth

Along with new characters, the audience will also get to explore the existing characters more. So far, Percy Jackson and the Olympians has focused predominantly on the three main characters, Percy, Annabeth, and Grover, as they approach their quest. A lot of the supporting characters have only appeared in the few episodes set at camp. In season 2, the show will have more time to dedicate to the other demigods as their characters become increasingly more important to the overall plot of the show. Namely, fans of the series can expect season 2 to show us more of both Clarissa and Luke as their respective plots move forward.

5. Parallels with the Odyssey

While a lot of the series parallels Greek mythology in many ways, it is only in “Sea of Monsters” that we can see some direct references to the Odyssey. Admittedly, Homer’s epic poem is referenced in season 1 as well, particularly with the Lotus hotel, but we can expect a lot more of these analogies in season 2 where Percy’s journey will mirror that of one of the most famous heroes in Greek mythology, Odysseus, one who interestingly enough is well known for having none other than Poseidon against him.

6. A New Quest

The first season of Percy Jackson and the Olympians was structured around a quest Percy and his friends had to complete, and in this respect season 2 won’t be much different. However, while the first quest we saw took us across the United States, Percy’s upcoming adventure will take him and his friends even further away from their homes and face dangers they could have never imagined as the stakes in the upcoming season are bound to become even higher than before.

Needless to say, this upcoming season is already shaping up to be an exciting one, as fans of the book will know, where we can look forward to seeing both new and familiar faces return on the screen. Although season 2 didn’t even start filming yet – as far s we know at least – I know I am already excited to see it. After all “Sea of Monsters” the second book of the Percy Jackson series that this second season will most likely be based on, is one of my favourite books from the first series.
