Adam Sandler is my Jesus. Worth over $440m, no jewelry, designer clothes, entourage, fancy car. Just walking around NYC, eating a jar of pickles. What a Mensch. In fact, i'll award the title of 'Mensch of the week' to one person, every week, from right now. Adam wins first Happy Easter 🐰

The more mighty founders & teams i see helping to build a more sustainable food system, the happier i am. UK green tech startup Clean Food Group have just bagged £2.5m to scale their sustainable oil and fat alternative from food waste. It's used in a number of consumables, including baked goods, confectionery and cosmetic applications. As a sector, oils and fats make up around 7% of total global greenhouse gas emissions 🤯Mega well done to Alex Neves, tom ellen and the Clean Food Group Team. Alarmingly fewsocial impact brands get it right. If you want to (get it right) just study Tony's Chocolonely.EVERYTHING they do links back to their mission‘To make 100% slave free the norm in chocolate’:🍫Their chocolate bars are ‘unequally divided’—illustrating that workers in the industry get a small piece while companies take a much larger share🍫They invest in their supply chain: paying cocoa farmers & training them and more through the Chocolonely Foundation🍫 They build brand advocacy and word of mouth around their product (it’s delicious!) and cause (it’s important—join us!) through acommunity strategy—turning ’chocofans’ who chomp into ‘serious friends’ who talk—the manifesto inside their wrapper, edgy cause-related campaigns and stunts and real, unfiltered representation of their cocoa-growing communities 🍫Their ingredients are 100% traceable. They publish an honest yearly impact report but also update a roadmap showing what their impact goals are, and where they exactly are on the road Building a social impact brand isn’t about saying you’re saving the world, or sending 1% of profits to whatever the f***.It’s stating your cause, making your case, and linking everything you do back to it.Tony's Chocolonely 👏🏻👏🏻PS. What does your brand sound like? If you're thinking 'wass he on about' you're not aloneSonic branding is a powerful tool for distinctiveness and recall, especially in today's sound-on world, and it's shockingly underusedThis video gives a brief summary of how MassiveMusic built TikTok's sonic identity which got a score of 82.5% when its appeal, recall and brand personality fit were tested across 4 key global markets. The process starts with identifying what the sound/s must represent. In TikTok's case this was the sound of 'creative democracy'That's joy, creativity, endless possibility, excitement, belongingSo what does or could you brand sound like? I'll create my BING BONG (sonic branding) for Mensch over the next week or two 😛When i'm done, I'll share the results + my process docs (for free) for anyone keen on doing their own Happy Friday!!PS. So great to see Nandos, a South African company, nailing it in the UK just like they do at home.Founder Robbie Brozen always spoke on focusing energy on shaping the Nando's culture. How important not only understanding but delighting culture is to Nando's success.'Our whole mindset is...how do we be the best in the world? You have to do incredible things that we call surprises and delights. Something that is so unexpected that they start remembering you.'- Robbie Brozen, Nandos Co-FounderNandos has done exactly that, weaving creativity and culture into their advertising, partnerships and product development at home. This partnership with Arsenal F.C and Bukayo Saka shows they can do it anywhere. 🌍

Throughout Mensch, I’ve exchanged reduced costs for branding services for equity in two startups I really believe in.One of them is green-tech. Covering all things brand since near day one, I’ve been privy to the immense work that goes on behind the curtains of any green-tech build.Because of the equity, my services over time have been much more flexible than the normal ‘hiring a brand agency’ situation.Normal is hiring a brand agency, investing heavily in time and money—scarce resources for startups, especially green-tech ventures rightly focused on R&D.For me, this prompts the question: when is the optimal time for a green-tech startup to go all in on branding?I have some thoughts. Let's discuss! I’ll follow up with my perspective soon.

I’ve never been pushed in a specific direction by my parents. I was taught three guiding principles: 1. Learn lots2. Do something3. Do everything with integrity They asked me recently if I felt they had pushed me to do this or that too much. My answer was they hadn’t. Thatrather all they did was teach me to apply these principles on my life’s journey, whatever it might be. They did it by example—they never wrote them down or spoke them verbatim. As I get older I find myself more and more grateful for who they are and the life they gave me. I’ve also become more and more aware of how rare an excellent childhood and parenting situation is. That whether it’s separation, parents that push too hard or something else, great parenting is something millions of people just never get to experience. I bring these principles into everything today: my decisions, my relationships, my work at Mensch. One thing you can't choose in life is your parents. But you can choose the kind of parent you’ll be. Be like mine!--📸left to right - me, my sister, my mom, my dad PS. If you enjoyed this post, ♻️share so others can too & follow meJonahas I build moving brands for mighty founders.
