Perfect texture. I did 1/2 cup sugar and 3/4 cup brown sugar and doubled vanilla. I also put a crisp topping on it with a stick of butter. Served with scoop of vanilla ice cream. Decadent!

Fantastic! I made the recipe today, scooped vanilla bean ice cream with it and it is delicious! And, easy🤗 Thank you very much for posting this recipe!

  3. Annie REVIEW:

Easy, lovely recipe! But a bit too sweet for me. I would cut back on the sugar. Also, while the pudding ended up moist, I want my pudding to be soaking wet so I will add more milk next time. But a great recipe even without my adjustments.

  9. TUTU REVIEW:
    January 28, 2019

TUTU Recipe extremely easy - made me feel like a proficient chef - used 1 tsp vanilla according to recipe - ran out of nutmeg so substituted this with about a tablespoon of Jamaican overproof rum - next time I will play with a tad of cinnamon/nutmeg (careful to be cautious with these spices they can make a great job bitter). Thanks!!!

Great recipe ... I just took my bread pudding out of the oven. Hubby loved it! I had some rye bread left over and I used only 3/4 cup of sugar and it came out perfect. I also sprinkled some cinnamon on the top when I took it out of the oven. Thanks for sharing:)

  23. Amya REVIEW:
    October 21, 2013

The recipe doesn't list the vanilla in the ingredient list. I added 3/4 teaspoon. It could maybe have used a whole teaspoon. It also doesn't list how much nutmeg so I just sprinkled it lightly. The recipe turned out ok. Very basic. I think I'd use something like cinnamon bread next time for more flavor.

    How much VANILLA?Thank you

  26. Bread Pudding Lover October 8, 2012

I just finished with the prep and it is in the oven baking. I love eating & making bread pudding. I lost my recipe & decided to try this one. The only thing I did different was drizzle about 4 TBSP. of melted butter over the bread before adding the milk mixture. Also I added cinnamon & nutmeg in the milk mixture so it is incorporated in the whole pudding and not just the top of it. I will post again when it is done cooking & let you know what my extremely picky eater husband thought of it.

FAQs

Why is my bread pudding mushy? ›

The harder bread will absorb that custard and won't break down. Any non-sliced white bread, like sourdough, French, or Challah will do. Using thin, sliced bread doesn't have enough heft and will likely lead to a mushy pudding.

Does bread pudding need to be refrigerated before baking? ›

You can assemble the bread pudding in the casserole dish up to a day before baking it. Cover it and refrigerate until ready to bake. Let it warm on the counter while your oven preheats and then bake as usual. Note that the longer you soak the bread pudding the softer and more custard-like the interior will be.

Should you cover bread pudding when baking? ›

Do you eat bread pudding with a spoon or fork? ›

The dish is served with a fork AND a spoon so you can get every last bit of that heavenly sauce. Advice: Ditch the fork – it's completely superfluous – and dig in with the spoon!

Why does my bread pudding fall after bringing out of the oven? ›
