    We are excited to welcome two new undergraduate student interns who will be helping us behind the scenes this semester. This morning we'd like to introduce our new Marketing and Communications Intern Sam Bohmer!     In my sophom*ore year of college, I did an internship at a tech PR firm. One of my first tasks: organize an Excel spreadsheet. When I turned in my "finished" work, a senior leader chewed me out. They rightfully pointed out all the ways the spreadsheet was messy with multiple font sizes, different row heights, centered vs left justified text, etc. It wasn't finished at all.I didn’t see it until they pointed it out. But from that day on, I knew what to look for and started to train myself to notice formatting.A few reflections:1) This is how we learn: We try our best, good managers point out how we could be better, and we train our eye to see what we didn't see before.2) Most skills are learnable. Before declaring, "I'm not detail-oriented," give yourself a chance. If you really can't learn a skill, you can find a function/role where your weaknesses are almost irrelevant.3) You can make many mistakes and still be okay. I certainly did over the years.     Benefits of Participating in an Externship: A Personal ExperienceParticipating in an externship, such as my 8-weeks experience with Beats by Dre in partnership with Extern on branding and research strategy, offers invaluable opportunities for personal and professional growth. Through this immersive experience, I gained a multitude of skills and insights that have shaped my career trajectory and outlook on the industry. I developed my capacity to conduct thorough research and do efficient data analysis during my externship. Performing primary research and in-depth analysis on customer opinions surrounding the Beats by Dre brand gave participants practical experience applying academic concepts to real-world situations. Additionally, I developed crucial time management skills, balancing multiple tasks and deadlines while maintaining a high level of quality and accuracy.Through my externship, I gained a hands-on grasp of branding and research strategy, surpassing the theoretical knowledge gained from textbooks and immersing myself in the daily operations of a well-known company. I have developed an understanding of the nuances of brand perception and the significance of matching marketing tactics with consumer preferences through projects like assessing the opinions of the Gen Z audience about marketing campaigns.The chance to network with specialists and professionals in the field was one of the most fulfilling parts of my externship.     This past weekend, I visited a dear friend in one of my absolute favorite cities: Pittsburgh. She and I met as freshmen at Carnegie Mellon University, nearly 25 years ago.Naturally, my husband (also an alum) dragged our kids for a quick campus tour in the 30-degree weather. ❄ And this walk down memory lane got me thinking about my very first role in nonprofit marketing communications: my student internship with CMU’s Marketing and Communications office. The role included what you would expect: writing and editing copy, conducting photo research, fact-checking, organizing files, etc.📂 As I noted all the vibrant signage and materials around campus today, I reflected on all that I learned from this internship during my junior and senior years:✔ How to work with graphic designers and other creatives✔ How to adhere to a brand style guide✔ How to collaborate with the fundraising team, a.k.a. Advancement✔ How to capture a unique sense of place and culture through storytellingI even pitched a few ideas – and got myself featured on the cover of the school’s monthly magazine wearing my sorority letters. (Need to dig that one out of the attic!)My professional career officially started in textbook publishing, but it only took a few years for me to wind my way back to MarCom.     It is brought in my knowledge that People email to CPA Firms to hire them for internship to get experience even request CPA firm "Do not pay" just hire them for practice experience.....My advice for those people is that please do not let down yourself and even other as well why you are asking? You will get nothing except demotivation.There is one simple rule to get work "Engagement" you must try to engage with your targeted audience (CPA Firms owners, staff etc) and engagement helps to build relations and then you will get work very easily.Nothing is done overnight but with great strategy which we teach in our course...you get business along with skills.

    🤗 The MA Strategic Advertising and Marketing Communications program at Greenwich is particularly meaningful to me when Im able to study Digital Marketing and Transformational Leadership through Transversal Skills Modules cause, in addition to the fact that I'm able to take in new knowledge, I also have the ability to broaden my perspective n comprehend more when Im being instructed by lots of professors, special guests. 👀 👫 The lecturer discusses many online certificates that available to be practiced online and taught for free (Google Digital Garage, Forage Website). For example, Forage website, gives me real internship experience by allowing me to make products at the request of real and growing businesses all over the world (JPMorgan Chase Software Engineering Virtual Internship, Deloitte Tech Consulting Virtual Internship, KPMG Data Analytics Virtual Internship, King & Wood Mallesons Corporate Law Virtual Experience Program, Sydney Romantics Design, Streetwear & Branding Virtual Internship, etc.). After handing in my work, not only was I educated on the firm background, but I was also given feedback and shown samples of items that were particularly original and inventive; in addition, I was awarded the certification then, my resume is strengthened as a result. 😲 😤 sos then when compared to other applicants, Forage students who successfully complete a company's virtual experience program have a 71% greater chance of finding employment.     Question / observation time for the advertising seniors: In interviewing for creative and developer talent and doing portfolio reviews a lot lately, it’s become clear that graduates, even those out of the “good programs” are not ready for the workforce more and more. In auditing programs over the past 10 years I think the problem is the approach and this may be common sense for most on here. Universities are doing a solid job at teaching the tools and some of the theory, but not the thing talent needs most, problem solving. A good indicator is one of my favorite interview questions and the stutter it gets almost every time: “What’s your approach to solving a design or strategy problem, what process do you go through?” Sometimes it’s a blank stare, and sometimes it’s the Google definition of problem solving. Anyone else experiencing similar situations? Are university and creative programs missing the boat? Antiquated? We are building an internship program to fill this gap at Tattoo and teach problem solving to go with the tools and creative juice. A way to apply all that a talented grad has learned in the moment in context.

    Matthew Wacker completed an exciting internship and here is what he had to share about the experience!I was placed on the Gannett | USA TODAY NETWORK Media B2B Marketing Team, which supports a variety of different sales teams and objectives. On my specific team, I find many ways to contribute to projects; and one of my main strengths/interests is copywriting. I write national USATN ad copy, email content, landing pages, sales email templates, creative video copy, and any other writing the team needs.My manager and team members bring me in on projects that I can both learn from and contribute to, and they work with me to develop more skills and gain exposure to new areas. Interns also attend weekly programming from company leaders in many different departments in the organization and learn more about different facets of the business.I discovered the internship opportunity on LinkedIn. I dedicated 30-minutes a day to browsing and applying to one or two companies. My initial interview took place in March, which was the first of three.2.     Speaking of questions.....if you're like me (someone with demonstrable work experience) you'll have a lot of students/ interns/ recent workforce entrants writing to you with requests for advice. Basically, with questions. Over the past month, I've received questions like - 'Tell me about brand strategy,' or 'Is it a good field?'I've written back to almost all these people saying I'm happy to offer a point of view, provided they have specific question(s) to ask. No one - not one self-proclaimed enthusiast - has gotten back to me. I'm not sure what to make of it. I very much hope they have something specific jotted down somewhere. Blind luck and optimism are fantastic, but not always reliable. If you don't ask, you don't really know. #questions #worklife #careeradvice
